The OnRamp Fellowship is the largest global “returnship” program for lawyers which has just expanded into the UK market with Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF), Hogan Lovells, and Barclays’ Compliance Group. The Fellowship matches experienced women lawyers who have taken a career break with law firms, financial services, and legal departments for one-year, paid Fellowships. This re-entry platform gives returning women lawyers a chance to broaden their legal experience, skills, and contacts while demonstrating their tremendous value in the marketplace.
There is gender equity at the entry-level in law firms, but many women leave mid-career for family responsibilities and other reasons, which is partly contributing to the stark deficit of women in the upper echelons of leadership. The goal of this program is to replenish the pipeline of experienced women in law firms in hopes of creating gender equity at the top levels.
The initiative started in January 2014 in the U.S. with four law firms (Hogan Lovells, Sidley, Cooley, and Baker Botts) and now includes 28 law firms including HSF, as well as Barclays’ Compliance Group and the legal departments at Amazon, BMO, and Microsoft. Together, the participating organisations have posted more than 200 Fellowship positions in 35 locations across the globe, including 10 positions in London.
